New Delhi: The Andhra Pradesh Cabinet on Friday approved the proposal to rename Konaseema district to Dr BR Ambedkar Konaseema, a month after the region witnessed violent protests against renaming the district.

The new Konaseema district was carved out of the erstwhile East Godavari in Andhra Pradesh on April 4. Later, in May, the state government issued a preliminary notification seeking to rename Konaseema as BR Ambedkar Konaseema district and invited objections, if any, from the people.

The Konaseema Sadhana Samiti had objected to the proposed renaming of the district and wanted the name Konaseema retained. The Samiti organised a protest on May 24 near the district Collector’s office and sought to submit a memorandum to Collector Himanshu Shukla against the renaming. However, the police tried to foil the protest, which apparently infuriated the protestors and eventually led to the violence.

The houses of Andhra Pradesh Minister Pinipe Viswarup and MLA Ponnada Satish in Amlapuram were set on fire in the protests that ensued.
