Karnataka Invites Tesla, Minister Tells Elon Musk State ‘EV Hub Of India’

Karnataka joined the league of states, including Tamil Nadu, Telangana, West Bengal, Maharashtra and Punjab, vying to attract the American electric vehicle giant.

New Delhi: Karnataka Minister Murugesh R Nirani on Tuesday invited business magnate Elon Musk to set up a Tesla plant in the state. Claiming that Karnataka has emerged as the “EV hub of India”, the Minister for Large and Medium-scale industries said that the state has more than 400 Research and Development (R&D) Centers and over 45 electric vehicle (EV) startups.

“With over 400 R&D centers, 45+ EV startups and an EV cluster near Bengaluru, Karnataka has emerged as EV hub of India. Mr Elon Musk, Karnataka would be an ideal destination to set up Tesla plant. Bengaluru is already Tesla’s maiden address in India,” Nirani said in a tweet.

As Tesla is looking to launch its products in India, Musk has said the US-based company is facing challenges in getting clearance to launch its vehicles in India. On January 13, responding to a tweet on the company’s plans to launch its products in India, Musk said, “Still working through a lot of challenges with the government”.

Tesla had last year sought a reduction in import duties so that its company’s high-performance electric cars can begin to sell in India.

On Monday, Tamil Nadu Minister Thangam Thenarasu also urged Musk to partner with the state in renewable energy market saying Tamil Nadu accounts for 34 per cent share in total planned investments for electric vehicles. “Hi Mr. Elon @elonmusk I’m from Tamil Nadu.Tamil Nadu accounts for 34% share in total planned investments for Electric Vehicles. Welcome to India’s EV capital. Also Tamil Nadu is one of the top nine renewable energy markets in the world,” he wrote.

Earlier, Telangana minister KT Rama Rao had invited Tesla CEO Elon Musk to set up shop in his state. KTR’s response came a day after the billionaire said that Tesla Inc is “still working through a lot of challenges with the government” in India to launch its electric cars.

Inviting Tesla to set up a plant in Punjab, Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu said that the Punjab model will create Ludhiana as a hub for EVs and battery industry with single window and time bound clearance for investment. He added this will help in job creation, environment preservation and sustainable development.

“I invite Elon Musk. Punjab Model will create Ludhiana as [a] hub for electric vehicles and battery industry with time bound single window clearance for investment that brings new technology to Punjab, create green jobs, walking path of environment preservation and sustainable development,” he tweeted.

Maharashtra Water Resources Minister Jayant Patil had earlier tweeted, “Elon Musk, Maharashtra is one of the most progressive states in India. We will provide you all the necessary help from Maharashtra for you to get established in India. We invite you to establish your manufacturing plant in Maharashtra.”
