New Delhi: Retail prices of tomato is soaring to a high of Rs 140 per kg in some parts of southern India. The tomato prices across the states in down south have witnessed a rapid rise over the past few weeks as the supplies have been hit due to the continuous rains.
While all India the average price of tomato has remained high at Rs 60 per kg for over a couple of weeks now, southern states like Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu are facing the brunt of high prices.
The kitchen staple is retailing at nearly Rs 140 per kg Chala market of Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. However, the whole sale price of tomatoes reaches Rs 120 per kg, the retail price ranges between Rs 140-160 per kg.
In many parts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, the price of tomato has jumped sharply to Rs 90 per kg. One of the customers also said, “Not only tomatoes but price of other vegetable prices also increasing over Rs 80-90 per kg due to rains.”
In Karnataka, the retail price of this kitchen vegetable was ruling at Rs 70 per kg in Bengaluru’s Malleswaram market.
