New Delhi: The cost of milk will go up by Rs 2 per litre from August 17 in parts of India as leading milk suppliers Amul and Mother Dairy have increased the prices citing a rise in input costs. Earlier, both the companies had hiked milk prices by Rs 2 per litre in March.
While Mother Dairy is a leading milk supplier in Delhi-NCR, rise in Amul milk’s prices will also affect markets in Ahmedabad and Saurashtra of Gujarat, West Bengal and Mumbai.
Why The Hike In Milk Prices
Amul, which is a government cooperative managed by the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), has attributed the milk price hike to rise in production costs. Giving a similar reason, Mother Dairy has said it has seen an increase in input costs in the last five months, which “compelled” the company to raise milk prices.
The GCMMF said the hike of Rs 2 per litre will translate into a 4 per cent increase in MRP (Maximum Retail Price) which is lower than the average food inflation. “This price hike is being done due to an increase in overall cost of operation and production of milk,” it said in a statement.
The cattle feeding cost alone has increased to approximate 20 per cent compared to last year, GCMMF said.
Meanwhile, Mother Dairy, which sells more than 30 lakh litres per day in poly packs and through vending machines in Delhi-NCR, said the inputs costs have gone up.
Elaborating on it, an official said the farm prices of raw milk have spiked by about 10-11 per cent. Further, the cost of feed and fodder has also witnessed a significant rise due to the heat wave and extended summer season.
Securing Interest Of Milk Producers
Amul passes on almost 80 paise of every rupee paid by consumers for milk and milk products to the milk producers. “Considering the rise in input costs, our member unions have also increased farmers’ price in the range of 8-9 per cent over the previous year,” GCMMF said. The price revision shall help in sustaining remunerative milk prices to our milk producers, it said.
Mother Dairy also said it is trying to secure the interests of both consumers and farmers. The company spends around 75-80 per cent of the sales realisation from milk towards the procurement of milk from the farmers.
