India recorded 36,571 new Covid-19 cases in the 24 hours ending 8 am Friday. Active cases further reduced to 3.63 lakh and the recovery rate jumped to over 97.52 percent. On Thursday, 540 new deaths were reported, with Kerala reporting the highest single-day fatalities, at 197, followed by Maharashtra’s 158 deaths.
Despite spikes in infections in some pockets of the country, daily cases of Covid-19 in India have gradually but steadily declined through August so far.
The seven-day average of cases however was 34,445 which has been declining since August 5. Also, cases have not breached the 40,000 mark for the last seven days.
The government is likely to start vaccination of children against Covid-19 only by March 2022, even as three-four vaccines are likely to be approved for the Under-18 age group by December, official sources said.
Zydus Cadila’s Covid-19 vaccine, ZyCoV-D, is expected to get an emergency use authorization for the 12-18 cohort by end of August, whereas Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin — the world’s only vaccine being tested for use in the age group of 2-18 years —is also likely to get a go-ahead by September.
