New Delhi: Virat Kohli will be hoping to secure his maiden ICC trophy as the Team India skipper when his side faces New Zealand in the final of the World Test Championship (WTC). However, ahead of the much-awaited finale of the WTC, former England captain Michael Vaughan predicted the winner.
The top two team on the ICC World Test Championship points table will face each other in the finale of the tournament from June 18 in Southampton, England.
India holds a win ratio of 72.2 per cent in the WTC, winning 12 matches. However, Virat Kohli side lost to New Zealand in both the fixtures in the World Test Championship.
Skipper Kane Williamson has guided the Black Caps to 7 wins out of their 11 fixtures and bagged 420 points on the WTC table. The Kiwis are set to face England in a two-match Test series ahead of their WTC final bout with India.
Ahead of the grand ICC event showdown, former England cricketer Michael Vaughan predicted Williamson’s New Zealand as the winner, while hinting that the Kiwis will have an advantage as they will play two fixtures before the WTC final.
“New Zealand (will win). English conditions, the Duke ball, and India on the back of a busy schedule… they’ll arrive pretty much a week before and go straight into it, [and] New Zealand have two test matches, you could argue warmups against England to get them prepared for the final. So it’s quite an obvious one for me,” Vaughan told Spark Sport.
The Indian squad are set to enter a 14-day COVID quarantine this week and will spend nearly 10 days in isolation in England as well upon arrival due to the ongoing global pandemic. However, Virat Kohli and Co. will get a week to prepare for the series finale.
Meanwhile, New Zealand players have already reached UK and are currently unerring isolation.
