WONDERING why defending champions Mumbai Indians are struggling in the second leg of the IPL!
Is it due to lack of form of their batsmen? Starting with Surya Kumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan to the three main allrounders – Pollard and the Pandya brothers, the Mumbai batting is really struggling to put runs on the board. Losing matches from winning positions isn’t something the fans can associate with this five-time champion team. Of course, nothing is more pleasing than watching Rohit Sharma bat in all formats of the game. He is effortless and carries a lazy elegance in his approach on the crease.
It is the same champion team that won the trophy last year. Yet, something has gone missing this season. There are six members from this team – Rohit, Surya, Ishan, Hardik, Bumrah and Deepak Chahhar — who are a part of the India team for the World T20, and most of them are not making an impact in the prelims before the ICC event. This could be worrying for the Indian team management.
More than Mumbai Indians, these top six players need to be in red-hot form for the sake of Indian cricket. Otherwise, who would play those impact innings in the World T20? Last time, India played an ICC event, Rohit Sharma had five centuries. Therefore, it is important to carry the confidence from IPL to the World T20, and so the Mumbai Indians need to come into form in national interest, if not winning the tournament for the sixth.
At least, the defending champions need to show some semblance of fight. Not that all the six players from Mumbai are going to be a part of the playing XI. The likes of Rohit, Surya, Bumrah and Hardik need to be in good form because they are a part of the core team.
