New Delhi: Former Team India skipper Mohammad Azharuddin has spoken on the possibilities of Rishabh Pant captaining the national side. Azharuddin said that Pant might actually be a front-runner to become the Indian captain in the years ahead.
“Rishabh Pant has had such fabulous few months, establishing himself in all formats. It won’t come as a surprise if the selectors see him as a front-runner fr Indian captaincy in near future. His attacking cricket will stand India in good stead in times to come,” Azharuddin tweeted.

On Tuesday, Pant was officially appointed as Delhi Capitals skipper for the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The decision came after DC captain Shreyas Iyer was ruled out of IPL 2021 due to a shoulder injury, which he had picked up during the India vs England 1st ODI in Pune.
DC head coach Ricky Ponting on Wednesday also said that the wicketkeer-batsman deserves to captain the franchise on the basis of his recent performances.
“Unfortunate that Shreyas will miss the tournament, but looking forward to seeing @RishabhPant17 grab his opportunity,” tweeted Ponting.
“It’s well deserved for his recent performances and he’s coming in with a lot of confidence. I’m convinced captaincy will make him an even better player,” he added.
The Delhi franchise appointed Rishabh as the captain of the side for the upcoming much-awaited season of the IPL. Recently, the wicketkeeper-batsman has been in eye-catching form and has put-on some match-winning performances during India’s series against Australia and England. However, out of all of them performances, the ones at Brisbane (fourth Test against Australia) and Ahmedabad (fourth Test against England) stand out from the rest.
The Delhi-franchise will be taking on MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in their opening match of IPL 2021 in Mumbai on April 10.
