New Delhi: Pakistan captain Babar Azam rose to his career-best Test rankings taking the number three spot. He surpassed Australia’s Steve Smith to reach the top three.

Babar, 27, is currently the top-ranked batsman in T20 and one-day international (ODI) formats. Last week, the Pakistan skipper scored 119 and 55 in the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, gaining the rating points to surge ahead of Smith on 848.

Babar now needs only 11 points to catch up with second ranked Marnus Labuschagne (885). Meanwhile, former England captain Joe Root (923) holds the top rank following his dominant performances against New Zealand and India in recent matches.

“As a player it’s a dream to become the No.1 in all formats and, for that, you have to focus and put in hard work,” Babar said last month during a press conference ahead of the Pakistan and West Indies ODI series.

“If you are to become No.1 in all three, you have to keep yourself fit and on track. There is back-to-back cricket and the gap is less. For that, you need to be extra fit,” he said.

Pakistan stay in the fourth place in the latest men’s ODI Team Rankings, with the team currently taking on Sri Lanka in a two-match Test series away from home.

At the completion of the Test series, Pakistan will get their chance to make some ground on India and other countries sitting above them on the rankings, with a three-match series against the Dutch in the Netherlands next month.
