THERE is Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan, who are a part of the Indian team for shorter formats, and then Sanju Samson comes in the pecking order. Although, the impression is that he has to wait for his opportunity, why can’t Samson be used for Test cricket? He is a brilliant touch player and his technique looks equally tight and praiseworthy.

Time and again, the biggest batsman India has produced, Sunil Gavaskar, praises him. Even former union minister Shashi Tharoor, a keen cricket follower, is such a big fan of Samson’s batting that he doesn’t mind wearing the Rajasthan Royals’ jersey. Former Indian captain Rahul Dravid is also a huge fan of his batting. Such is the aura of Samson that many outside the celebrity world are batting for him.

What has really not worked for Samson is his consistency level. He starts an IPL season with a splash and then fades out as the tournament progresses. However, this year, Samson is in good form and most importantly is showing great consistency.

Amongst the top run getters, his name is third on the list. KL Rahul, as always, is leading the pack with wily Shikhar Dhawan second. If Samson can continue with this consistent form, his skill and temperament are absolutely suited for Test cricket. It boils down to when the selectors will take this call.

Can we see Sanju in Test cricket in a year or two? He was picked for a short Sri Lankan series under Dravid’s tutelage, where he couldn’t show his class. The problem with people who back him is that they are expecting him to fire immediately after wearing the Indian jersey. Those who know how Indian cricket works will tell you that it takes time for a talent to come out with flying colors. If someone high up there wasn’t patient enough with Virender Sehwag and Rohit Sharma – they wouldn’t have become legends in Indian cricket!
