New Delhi: Virat Kohli on Saturday stepped down as the captain of the Indian Test team, a day after India lost the three-match Test series against South Africa. As the Indian cricketer quit captaincy, social media was flooded with messages from several in the cricketing world as well as his fans. While some of his colleagues and former cricket players expressed shock at his decision, many congratulated him on his successful tenure as the captain and expressed gratitude for his contribution.

The BCCI also took to Twitter to congratulate Kohli on his tenure as Team India captain. “BCCI congratulates #TeamIndia captain @imVkohli for his admirable leadership qualities that took the Test team to unprecedented heights. He led India in 68 matches and has been the most successful captain with 40 wins,” the board said.

Expressing shock, former Indian international cricketer Suresh Raina said, “Although I also am shocked by @imVkohli sudden decision, I respect his call. I can only applaud him for what he has done for world cricket & India. Easily one of the most aggressive and fittest players India has had. Hope he’d continue to shine for India as a player.”

“When Virat took over as Test captain, India winning a test overseas was an achievement, now if India lose an overseas test series it is an upset. And that’s how far he has taken Indian cricket forward, and that will be his legacy. Congratulations on successful reign @imVkohli,” wrote former cricketer Wasim Jaffer.

Former bowling all rounder Irfan Pathan thanked Virat Kohli for his contribution to the Indian Team as the captain. “Whenever the talk of Indian cricket captains will arise in test cricket @imVkohli‘s name will be up there, not only for results but the kind of impact he had as a captain. Thank you #ViratKohli,” he said.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah hailed Kohli for bringing a fitness revolution in the Indian Team saying, “Congratulations to @imVkohli on a tremendous tenure as #TeamIndia captain. Virat turned the team into a ruthless fit unit that performed admirably both in India and away. The Test wins in Australia & England have been special.”

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said, “No Indian fan would have wanted you to go this way @imVkohli, after a defeat. Your contributions as captain have been immense, your presence & energy inspirational, your articulation impressive. You always led from the front. You embodied the spirit of the team. We will miss you.”

Twitter was filled with messages of appreciation and gratitude for the outgoing captain.

Last year, Kohli had stepped down as the T20I captain and then he was removed as the ODI leader as the selectors wanted one captain for the white-ball format. Kohli’s biggest win in the longest format came during 2018-19 as India won its first Test series Down Under. Under his captaincy, India also reached the finals of the World Test Championship (WTC). However, Kohli has not registered a century in international cricket since November 2019. He last scored a ton against Bangladesh in the day-night Test at the Eden Gardens.
