New Delhi: New Zealand’s former cricketer Simon Doull said “ India’s Current Crop Are Nowhere Near The Quality Of Players Of Spin Of Years Gone By”. He made this statement during the lunch time on fourth day of the test match between India and New Zealand on “Byjus Cricket Live” show.
During the discussion Simon Doull went into the depth of the matter while discussing the state of Indian batting against spinners. Reacting on Ajinkya Rahane’s dismissal against Ajaz Patel in the second innings. Doull said “He’s a better player than that. His dismissals against spin since 2019, you look at those, outside the line of off-stump, a lot of full deliveries. So, he’s getting lbw with the one that’s skidding on, he’s nicked off, or he’s chipping one to cover, mid-off and those areas. So, those are the dismissals against spin he would be worried about.”
Doull went on to comment on Indian batters in general and said “Normally you’d think Indian players, Indian conditions, better players of spin. I don’t think by any stretch the current crop of Indian players are anywhere near the quality of players of spin of years gone by. The Laxmans, the Dravids, the Sachins, and Gautam Gambhir. Players like that who were just brilliant players of spin. I don’t think the current crop are as good.”
Talking about the current lot of players in the Indian team Doull was also quite skeptical as to what can be the reasons. Doull said Is that possibly because Indian players are not playing much domestic cricket or Indian spinners also are not rolling their arm over in the domestic arena, he said this referring to Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel and Ashwin in particular.
Irfan Pathan cited two reasons for the same. According to him, since 2018 Indian pitches started having a lot of grass in domestic cricket and that took spinners out of the game. He also believed that a lot of players face side-arm bowling at high pace quite often regularly in the nets because of which they struggle with their foot movement.
In the recent past even Virat Kohli is seen struggling specially against the left arm spinners. The fact that India is a country known to play the spinners very well with likes of Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar to name a few, seeing the current lot struggling against spin becomes a big matter of concern.
Now for obvious reasons it is tough for regular Indian team members specially for seniors like Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane to play a Ranji match with them being busy with their tight ICC calendar. The players are busy playing elsewhere and adapting to different conditions. With this the option of playing domestic cricket goes out of the window.
India ended up the fourth day on a high note. India’s lower order saved the day after the collective failure of the top order. Thanks to resistance shown by Wriddhiman Saha, Axar Patel and Ashwin down the order India recovered from 51-5 during the morning session to declare on 234-7.
