New Delhi: India announced its final squad for the T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates and Oman, The BCCI in a press conference on Wednesday named a 15-member squad for the tournament.
In one of the biggest surprises, Ravichandran Ashwin has been named in the squad while opener Shikhar Dhawan failed to make the cut in the final squad.
Ashwin played his last T20I against West Indies in July 2017.
Virat Kohli will lead the side as he looks to win his first ICC trophy ever since taking captaincy from Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
He is joined by Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Ishan Kishan in the batting department.
Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel have been named the all-rounders for the team.
Jasprit Bumrah will spearhead the bowling attack and is joined by Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohd Shami as the pacers for the side.
India has gone with a total of five spinners which include three specialist spinners in the form of Ashwin, Varun Chakravarthy, and Rahul Chahar.
However, Yuzevendar Chahal who has been India’s most consistent spinner in the shortest format of the game could not find himself a place in the team.
BCCI secretary Jay Shah also said that ex-captain MS Dhoni will be the mentor for the side during the tournament.
Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer, Shardul Thakur, and Deepak Chahar have been named as stand-by players for the team.
The T20 World Cup will take place from October 17 to November 14.
India have been drawn into New Zealand, Afghanistan and arch-rivals Pakistan and will be joined by two more teams from the final qualifying round.
