New Delhi: During the third and final ODI at Newlands on Sunday, ex-India skipper Virat Kohli courted controversy and faced backlash on social media. Kohli, who resigned as the Test captain following India’s series loss to South Africa, was spotted chewing gum while the national anthem was being played ahead of the game. Once fans spotted this on social space, they came down heavily on Kohli.

Because Virat is not the captain, he was not standing at the start of the line. But when India’s national anthem began, the camera was focused on him. He seemed lost and was seen chewing the gum and singing in between.

This act of Virat Kohli was recorded by Indian fans and they have not received it well. Kohli was roasted on the social media website for ‘disrespecting’ the national anthem.

As per tradition, the national anthem of both the countries is played prior to the encounter being played with the Indian one played first owing to them being the visitors. And as it rang across the concourses, the cameras zoomed in on Kohli who was seen chewing gum with his head down whilst his counterparts proudly held their heads high and bellowed the national anthem.

Video of the incident needed little time in going viral with many lashing out at Kohli for disrespecting the national anthem.

Earlier this month, the 33-year-old this month quit the Test captaincy, months after resigning from T20I captaincy, following which he was unceremoniously removed from ODI captaincy.

Kohli’s decision helped raise quite a few eyebrows as he had said in September last year that he wanted to continue leading India in Tests and ODIs when he announced his decision to quit T20I captaincy. In a dramatic turn of events thereafter, Kohli was sacked as ODI captain and the star batter eventually stepped down from the leadership role in Tests, which he prioritized over the years.
