New Delhi: Indian captain Virat Kohli on Thursday (September 16) announced that he is stepping down as the Team India’s T20 skipper after the 2021 T20 World Cup in Dubai.
Kohli took to Twitter to release an official statement announcing that he will be stepping down as Team India’s T20 captain.
“I have been fortunate enough to not only represent India but also lead the India Cricket Team to my utmost capability. I thank everyone who has supported me in my journey as the Captain of the Indian Cricket Team,” Kohli said in the official release.
Twitterati were shocked by Kohli’s sudden decision and took to the social media platform to express their views.
BCCI General Secretary Jay Shah thanked Kohli for his services as captain and praised his handling of captaincy and individual performance at the same time.
“Thanks @imVKohli for your contribution as the #TeamIndia captain. As a young talent the focus and determination you have showed as the captain is unmatched. The most impressive aspect was the way of maintaining balance between captaincy and individual performance,” he tweeted.
“Best wishes for the T20 World Cup. I am sure you will bring glory to the country, tweeted former Indian player Venkatesh Prasad.
Congress leader and former BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla lauded Kohli’s contribution and asked everyone to respect the decision taken by him.
“Virat Kohli’s contribution to the Indian T20 cricket team as captain was immense. It can never be forgotten. This is his personal decision and we respect it,” he wrote on Twitter.
Some fans shared Kohli’s record as captain of India in the shortest format of the game in which he has managed to win a series against every major nation.
Some fans also expressed hope that it would help him discover his form with that bat.
“Virat has been a true asset for Indian Cricket and has led with aplomb. He is one of the most successful captains in all the formats. The decision has been made keeping in mind the future roadmap. We thank Virat for his tremendous performance as the T20I Captain. We wish him all the best for the upcoming World Cup and beyond and hope that he continues to score plenty of runs for India,” BCCI President Sourav Ganguly said in a statement.
Rohit Sharma is expected to take over the reins as he has been successful in the Indian Premier League with the Mumbai Indians and also led India to a victory in the 2018 Asia Cup.
