New Delhi: India will take on England in the one-off Test at Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham that is scheduled to take place from July 1. The match is a part of last year’s five-match Test series that was postponed after a Covid-19 outbreak in the Indian camp following the fourth Test.

India leads the five match series 2-1 after registering victories in Lords cricket ground and Kennington Oval. India’s star batter Rohit Sharma was to lead the Indian side in the final test but chances of him playing in the match remain doubtful after he tested positive for Covid-19 on June 25.

Sharma took over the captaincy after Virat Kohli decided to step down as skipper in January 2022. The absence of Rohit Sharma can possibly jolt India’s chances of winning the Edgbaston test.

All eyes are on the team management, which will take a call on who will captain India. Here are a few names who can take on the responsibility of leading the side in the upcoming match:

Here are the top 4 picks for captaincy role for the Test match against England:

1) Virat Kohli

Former India test skipper is an ideal choice to captain the side in the absence of Rohit Sharma. So far, Kohli has been the most successful Indian captain in the longest format of the game. Chances are that the team management could consider his name as he is one of the best in the lot.

Kohli led India in 68 Tests and won 40 of them. With 101 Tests, he is one of the most experienced players in the team.

2) Jasprit Bumrah

The spearhead of the Indian pace attack in all the three formats can turn out to be an interesting choice to lead the Indian side in the test match against England. Bumrah is highly involved in decision making on the field during the matches. The bowler has been an integral part of the Indian setup with an experience of around 6 to 7 years.

The right-arm pacer has been a match winner for India in the last few years and he also has the capability to turn the match in India’s favour with the ball in hand.

3) Rishabh Pant

The Indian wicket keeper is seen by many as the future captain of India. Pant is the numero uno choice for wicket keeper for India in all forms of cricket. In the past few years, Pant has proved to be a match-winner for India.

Pant led Delhi Capitals in last two seasons of the IPL and has impressed with his captaincy skills. The southpaw has payed some amazing knocks for India in Test cricket. Pant scored centuries in Australia, South Africa and England which are the most challenging countries to bat in the red ball cricket.

Pant has so far played 30 Test matches for India scoring 1920 runs at an average of 40.85.

4) R Ashwin

Ravichandran Ashwin is the one of the most successful spinners in the Indian team at the moment with more the 400 wickets. Ashwin has proven himself to be a match winner as also has the ability to contribute lower down the order with the bat.

Ashwin has so far scored 2,931 runs in Test cricket at an average of 26.89. The right-handed batter also has 5 centuries to his credit. He played an instrumental role in India’s win against Australia in the 2021 series in absence of then-skipper Virat Kohli.

With so much experience, Ashwin could turn out to be a decent choice for the leadership role.
