Kolkata: On Friday the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced their decision to field advocate and vice president of the party’s youth wing Priyanka Tibrewal against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for the by-election in the Bhawanipur seat.
On the auspicious day of Ganesh Chaturthi, the West Bengal Chief Minister filed her nomination at the Survey Building in Alipore while on that very same day the BJP decided to announce their candidate.
Apart from Bhabanipur, the BJP has also announced the name of the candidate for the elections to be held on two more assembly seats, Jangipur and Shamsherganj assembly seats. The party has fielded Sujit Das from Jangipur while Milan Ghosh from Shamsherganj.
Tibrewal has played a crucial role as one of the lawyer of post-poll violence cases in West Bengal which now due to a Calcutta High Court order is being investigated by the CBI.
Priyanka Tibrewal graduated from Delhi University and studied law from Calcutta University. She practices at the Calcutta High Court and the Supreme Court. She also holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the Assumption University, Thailand.
In the past, Tibrewal has handled a wide range of cases from defending victims of atrocities of the state government, such as in the Raniganj riot case or the Purulia murder case, and has always stood up for the cause of justice and liberty, say the party workers.
According to BJP sources, the central leadership wanted to feild a woman as a candidate against CM Mamata Banerjee thus Tebriwal’s name was coming up. Three names had been sent to Delhi and the party leadership announced name.
Though she had lost in the 2021 Assembly elections from Entally, but with the cases filed in the post-poll violence issue, Tebriwal was in in the eyes of the Central leadership as a probable candidate.
Tibrewal joined the BJP in August 2014 after being suggested by Babul Supriyo, the singer-turned-BJP politician, and inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She was the legal adviser of Supriyo.
In 2015, she contested the Kolkata Municipal Corporation elections from ward number 58, Entally, as a BJP candidate, but she lost to the Trinamool Congress’s Swapan Samaddar.
During her over six year tenure in the BJP, she has handled several crucial assignments, and in August 2020 she was made the vice president of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) in West Bengal.
She contested the assembly elections this year from Entally but lost to the TMC’s Swarna Kamal Saha by a margin of 58,257 votes.
While speaking to reporters after the announcement Tebriwal told reporters, “The party has trusted me, I am thankful to my party. But I want to mention that before being the candidate of BJP, I am the candidate of the people of West Bengal. The reason is in the last five months the fight which has taken place, the trust people placed in me, the martyed victim’s families have shown, the faith shown by the women who were raped, the people whom I helped to return to their houses, they have shown faith.”
“I have fought one fight and shown you, that I am not one to back away from a fight, whether it is against the government or otherwise. I have fought for people and won. She was also the chief minister of those were brutally killed, she was also the chief minister of the women who were raped and she was also the chief minister for those who were left homeless. Why was the chief minister silent then?”
Tibrewal feels she has already challenged and won against CM Mamata Banerjee once in court this will be the second time she is taking on the CM. “I have already taken on Mamata Banerjee in court when I proved her wrong on the issue of post-poll violence in Bengal. This is the second time I will challenge her,” she said.
This time the battle for Bhawanipore is not only a battle between two women but a battle between two women from the same area. Like TMC slogan “bangla nijer Meye ke chai” Tibrewal is also from the Bhawanipore area and knows every lane and by lane of the area as it is her maternal grandmother’s home and she was born there .
According to sources, BJP leaders like state president Dilip Ghosh, leader of Opposition Suvendhu Adhikari will campaign for Tibrewal. Also central leaders like Smiti Irani, Shanawaz Hussain, Shantanu Thakur will campaign for her.
Banerjee had lost the assembly election in Nandigram earlier in 2021 to BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari, who is now the Leader of Opposition in West Bengal. Though she has taken charge as chief minister for the third time after the Trinamool Congress’s mega victory in the election, Banerjee needs to win the Bhabanipur bypoll to retain the chai.”
