New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Paty’s Priyanka Tibrewal is set to file her nomination papers on Monday for the by-election to the Bhabanipur seat. Last week, BJP announced their decision to field the advocate and vice president of the party’s youth wing against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for the by-election in the Bhawanipur seat.
On the auspicious day of Ganesh Chaturthi, the West Bengal Chief Minister filed her nomination at the Survey Building in Alipore while on that very same day the BJP decided to announce their candidate.
Apart from Bhabanipur, the BJP has also announced the name of the candidate for the elections to be held on two more assembly seats, Jangipur and Shamsherganj assembly seats. The party has fielded Sujit Das from Jangipur while Milan Ghosh from Shamsherganj.
Tibrewal has played a crucial role as one of the lawyers of post-poll violence cases in West Bengal which now due to a Calcutta High Court order is being investigated by the CBI.
Priyanka Tibrewal graduated from Delhi University and studied law from Calcutta University. She practices at the Calcutta High Court and the Supreme Court. She also holds a Master of Business Administration degree from Assumption University, Thailand.
In the past, Tibrewal has handled a wide range of cases from defending victims of atrocities of the state government, such as in the Raniganj riot case or the Purulia murder case, and has always stood up for the cause of justice and liberty, said the party workers.
According to BJP sources, the central leadership wanted to field a woman as a candidate against CM Mamata Banerjee thus Tebriwal’s name was coming up. Three names had been sent to Delhi and the party leadership announced the name.
Though she had lost in the 2021 Assembly elections from Entally, with the cases filed in the post-poll violence issue, Tebriwal was in in the eyes of the Central leadership as a probable candidate.
Tibrewal joined the BJP in August 2014 after being suggested by Babul Supriyo, the singer-turned-BJP politician, and inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She was the legal adviser of Supriyo.
In 2015, she contested the Kolkata Municipal Corporation elections from ward number 58, Entally, as a BJP candidate, but she lost to the Trinamool Congress’s Swapan Samaddar.
