New Delhi: Uttarakhand Congress MLA from Purola, Rajkumar joined BJP at the saffron party’s office in New Delhi. He joined the party in the presence of Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and state party president Madan Kaushik.
Rajkumar’s joining the BJP assumes significance considering the proximity of 2022 assembly polls.
This comes close on the heels of Independent MLA and former Uttarakhand minister Pritam Singh Panwar’s move to join the BJP on Wednesday. He came into the party fold in presence of Union minister Smriti Irani. Panwar is an MLA from Dhanolti in Uttarakhand.
Welcoming Panwar in the party fold, BJP Uttarakhand president Madan Kaushik said he will be an asset for the party. After joining the party, Panwar said he will give his best to whatever responsibility is given to him.
Gearing up for the upcoming state assembly polls, the BJP on Wednesday named its organisational spearheads for the elections, putting Union ministers Dharmendra Pradhan, Pralhad Joshi, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Bhupender Yadav in charge for the contest in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab and Manipur respectively. West Bengal MP Locket Chatterjee and party spokesperson R P Singh are co-incharges for the Uttarakhand polls.
The BJP, which is in power in Uttarakhand, is in direct contest with the Congress in the state and has deployed its well-oiled election machinery to retain power there.
Earlier this week, Uttarakhand Governor Baby Rani Maurya resigned two years before completing her tenure. She tendered her resignation to President Ram Nath Kovind, a Rajbhawan official said. She has resigned for personal reasons, he said.
Maurya was sworn in as the governor of Uttarakhand on August 26, 2018 taking over from Krishna Kant Paul at the end of his five-year tenure. She had completed three years in office as the governor last month.
