New Delhi: Praised for its sensitive representation of gender and patriarchal issues in Indian households, the Malayalam film The Great Indian Kitchen has arrived on streaming platform Amazon Prime Video.
The movie which had begun streaming on the digital platform Neestream 2 months go, released on Amazon Prime Video on April 2. Directed by Jeo Baby, the critically acclaimed film is seen as an brilliant attempt at smashing patriarchy.
Sharing the news with fans as well as thanking the audience for appreciating the movie, the director posted on his Instagram handle, ”Only because of Great Audience N @neestream Thank you all Now streaming on @primevideoin”.

Earlier the makers had faced a lot of difficulties in releasing the film which was the reason behind all the buzz created around the movie. As per multiple reports, the film was rejected by several OTT platforms before being released on Amazon Prime Video.
The Great Indian Kitchen revolves around a nameless newlywed couple, played by Nimisha Sajayan and Suraj Venjaramoodu. The wife is a dance enthusiast but post-marriage her life is spent in cooking and cleaning.
Netizens began discussing whether big OTT platforms do provide a platform for regional films after the news of the film being rejected appeared on the internet. One social media user, ”regional industries r the hope now. Recently Netflix and amazon refused to do a Malayalam movie called #TheGreatIndianKitchen which had some controversial topics”.
Another tweeted, ”#TheGreatIndianKitchen such a brilliant script. The movie talks about the real face of Indian family system. Everyone should watch it”. The 2021 Malayalam film, stars actors Nimisha Sajayan and Suraj Venjaramoodu in the lead. Sooraj S Kurup and Mathews Pulickan have composed the music for the movie. The film is also being remade in Tamil by director R Kannan.
