Mumbai: South cinema has been on a roll. After receiving positive reviews from critics and audience alike, Suriya’s Jai Bhim and Mohanlal’s Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham have now been included in the long list of films eligible for the Oscars 2022. The two films found a place in the shortlist of 276 films which are in contention to get nominated at the 94th Academy Awards.
The final list of films shortlisted for the Oscars will be announced on February 8 and the award ceremony will be broadcasted on March 27. The production company of Jai Bhim celebrated the news on Twitter.
“Into the #Oscars race! #JaiBhim makes it into the 276 films shortlisted by @TheAcademy for the 94th Academy Award nominations,” read the tweet from 2D Entertainment’s official account.
Suriya and Lijomol Jose-starrer Jai Bhim, directed by TJ Gnanavel, was critically acclaimed by viewers and critics. Scenes from the film have now been featured on the official Oscars YouTube channel for their ‘Scene At The Academy’ segment.
The movie had also made an official entry to the Golden Globes 2022 as a nomination under the category of Best Non-English Language Film. Sharing the news online, the makers of the movie and production company 2D Entertainment called it “an honour of the highest order”.
This is not the first time that an Indian film has been picked up by the Oscars. In the past, movies like Lagaan, Gandhi, Jallikattu, Gullyboy, Newton, Mother India, etc have been featured at the Academy Awards, showcasing the creativity and cinematography of Indian directors and storytellers.
Marakkar is a film packed with intense action scenes, decent performances and a thin storyline to wrap around itself. The Mohanlal-starrer is a visual spectacle mounted on a grand scale and has won three National Award winner.
