New Delhi: Celebrated boxer Vijender Singh has extended his support to Munawar Faruqui over the stand-up comic’s ‘hate won, artist lost’ post on Sunday. Vijender shared a tweet about Faruqui after Bengaluru Police reportedly opted to cancel his stand-up show in Karnataka’s capital city.

Comedian Munawar Faruqui released a statement on Sunday suggesting that he might stop performing after several of his shows were cancelled due to threats from right-wing groups. The statement came after the Bengaluru Police wrote to the organisers of his show requesting that they cancel the show.

Several people including actors Swara Bhasker and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub reacted to the news calling Munawar’s experience ‘unfair’. Fellow stand-up comedians and artistes expressed their support for Munawar Faruqui.

Taking to Twitter in the aftermath of the incident, Vijender shared a tweet to mark solidarity with the embattled comic. Vijender’s ‘I stand with #MunawarFaruqui’ tweet has garnered over 8k likes and 1.5k retweets on the microblogging site. Besides boxer Vijender, popular stand-up comics Kunal Kamra, Varun Grover, Aditi Mittal, actor Mohd Zeeshan Ayyub and actress Swara Bhasker have extended their support to Faruqui over the stand-up comic’s ‘hate won, artist lost’ post on Twitter.

“My name is Munawar Faruqui. And that’s been my time, you guys were (a) wonderful audience. Good bye, I’m done,” Faruqui said. According to Faruqui, 12 of his stand-up shows have been called off in the last two months due to threats. Faruqui’s ‘Dongri to Nowhere’ comedy show was scheduled to take place at a city auditorium on Sunday in Bengaluru.

“We sold 600+ tickets. Month back my team called late Puneeth Rajkumar sir organisation for charity which we will going to generate from this show in Bangalore! We agreed to not sell the show on the name of charity as suggest by the Noble organisation,” the embattled comic said in a lengthy post shared on Instagram.

According to a report filed by news agency PTI, a police inspector has stated that several organisations have opposed Faruqui’s show in the city. “It is learnt that Munawar Faruqui is a controversial figure….. Many states have banned his comedy shows. It is learnt that a case has been registered against him in the Tukoji police station in Indore of Madhya Pradesh,” the inspector said in his letter.
