Coronavirus India Update: Slight dip reported with 3,57,229 new COVID-19 cases on May 4

The new case tally is lower than the previous day high of 3,68,147 new infections reported on Monday.

New Delhi: India reported close to 360,000 new cases in the last 24 hours on Tuesday, a slight dip from the previous day. As per the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, 3,57,229 new COVID-19 cases were reported on Tuesday morning. The tally was lower than the previous day high of 3,68,147 new infections reported on Monday.

The new cases pushed the total tally to 2,02,82,833 cases in the country as on May 4.

As per the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, as many as 3,449 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours, up from 3,417 deaths reported on Monday. With more than 3400 deaths the total death tally in the country rose to 2,22,408 lives lost to date.

The spurt in new cases has crossed the 4-lakh mark in the country on Saturday, which dipped in the past two days. The cases have been rising since mid-April and had crossed the 3 Lakh mark within a week. The new infections have been staying above 200,000-mark since April 15. The new cases have been increasing at an alarming pace since the country broke the one lakh case barrier on April 4 when it reported 1,03,558 new COVID-19 cases. Within a fortnight, the numbers have doubled, sounding alarm bells throughout the country as medical infrastructure, doctors and patients grapple with resource crunch.

On the recovery front, 3,20,289 discharges were recorded in the last 24 hours, Ministry of health data showed on Tuesday. The total number of patients that have been discharged stood at 1,66,13,292 cases in the country on May 4.

The country also saw a dip in active cases from the previous day. From a total of 34,13,642 active cased logged on Monday, the country recorded 34,47,133 active cases on Tuesday.

On the vaccination front, a total of 15,89,32,921 doses have been administered in the country to date. India began its vaccination programme on January 16 and has begun its third phase of vaccine rollouts on May 1, for everyone who is above 18 years of age.
