New Delhi: Twelve Opposition MPs were suspended from the Rajya Sabha for the rest of the Winter Session on account of ‘unruly behaviour’ during the Monsoon Session of the Parliament.

The action against the 12 MPs was taken for causing indiscipline on the last day of the monsoon session in the house.

The notice regarding the suspension of the MPs from Rajya Sabha was issued on Monday (first day of the winter session) for complete abuse of the rules of the House. The motion was moved by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Prahlad Joshi and was passed by voice vote, even as the Opposition protested.

The members are suspended under Rule 256 of Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Rajya Sabha.

The suspended MPs include:
  1. Elamaram Kareem (CPM)
  2. Phulo Devi Netam (INC)
  3. Chhaya Verma (INC)
  4. Ripun Bora (INC)
  5. Binoy Viswam (CPI)
  6. Rajamani Patel (INC)
  7. Dola Sen (TMC)
  8. Shanta Chhetri (TMC)
  9. Syed Nasir Hussain (INC)
  10. Priyanka Chaturvedi (Shiv Sena)
  11. Anil Desai (Shiv Sena)
  12. Akhilesh Prasad Singh (INC)
Opposition condemns suspension:

Soon after the announcement of the suspension notice, a joint statement was released by Leaders of Opposition parties of Rajya Sabha. The leaders unitedly condemned the unwarranted and undemocratic suspension of the twelve MPs. Floor leaders of the Opposition parties therefore have called a meeting on the next course of action, over the suspension of the Rajya Sabha MPs, at LoP in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge’s office tomorrow.

Congress MP Ripun Bora, one of the Rajya Sabha MPs suspended for this session, alleged that his suspension is totally undemocratic and is the murder of democracy and Constitution.

Chhaya Verma, another MP who is facing the suspension said, “This suspension is simply unfair and unjust. There were other members from other parties who created a ruckus but the chairman suspended me. PM Modi is doing just as he wishes since he enjoys a brute majority.”

What caused the suspension:

The MPs were suspended for willingly obstructing the business of the house through “unprecedented acts of misconduct, contemptuous, violent and unruly behaviour and intentional attacks on the security personnel” on the last day of the Monsoon session.

The Monsoon session of the parliament ended two days earlier to its scheduled date in August, following constant disruptions and adjournments as the Opposition party leaders were protesting against the Pegasus snooping row and the three farm laws.

The opposition party leaders, who were protesting, allegedly caused indiscipline in the upper house on the last day of the session by climbing on the officials’ table, waving black cloth and throwing files when the House began a discussion on farmers’ protest. They also allegedly manhandled the security personnel.
