New Delhi: Four people were nabbed in Haryana’s Karnal on Thursday after arms, ammunition and suspected RDX was allegedly recovered from the vehicle they were travelling in, a senior police official said. The four terror suspects have been sent to police remand till May 15.

On the basis of some intelligence inputs, the four, all residents of Punjab, were nabbed near Bastara toll plaza, Karnal Range Inspector General of Police, Satender Kumar Gupta, said.

“They hail from Punjab. Preliminary information suggests that they were basically acting as couriers and transporting these arms and ammunition in an Innova vehicle and were headed to Adilabad in Telangana,” Gupta said. The accused have been identified as Gurpreet, Amandeep Parminder and Bhupinder.

They will be produced before a court and taken on police remand after which they will be questioned in detail, he said. “Three containers suspected to contain RDX, firearm, a pistol and 31 round live cartridges have been seized from the vehicle,” he added.

FIR has been registered into the matter. “Desi pistol, 31 live ammunition, 3 iron-container with explosives, and nearly Rs 1.3 lakh have been recovered,” said Ram Poonia, SP, Karnal.

“As soon as we got a credible input, we acted on it and alerted our team. The vehicle has ‘DL’ in its number, however, the owner of the vehicle is yet not known. The detention was made near the Bastara toll,” Poonia told reporters here.

The SP further informed that the accused were in touch with a Pakistan-based man Harvinder Singh Rinda, who asked them to drop arms and ammunition at Adilabad, Telangana.

“Accused Gurpreet received explosives sent from across the border using a drone in Ferozepur district. Earlier, they dropped explosives at Nanded,” he said. The police official further said that Harvinder Singh is involved in terrorist activities and has sent two consignments already.

Further investigation into the matter is underway.

Speaking to reporters in Rohtak, Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said investigations in the case were underway and police were conducting an in depth probe.

Haryana’s Home Minister Anil Vij told reporters that “four terrorists were going in the Innova vehicle. We arrested them on the basis of inputs and arms and ammunition has been recovered. Further probe is on”.

“Preliminary investigations have revealed certain things, which we need to cross check and ascertain more categorically,” Director General of Police, P K Agrawal told PTI.

When asked if the arms and ammunition they were transporting were dropped in the fields in Ferozepur in Punjab using a drone from Pakistan, the DGP said, “That is what they have told, but these details we need to verify and establish the veracity of these facts”.

After the vehicle was intercepted in Karnal, a bomb disposal squad and forensic experts reached the spot, police said.

Haryana Police has constituted a Special Investigation Team to conduct further probe.

A case under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and under the provisions of the Arms Act and the Explosive Substance Act has been registered.
