Kolkata: Durga Puja is not only about theme celebrations or social messages but it is also about food. Some people in these five days go on a diet, while some on the other hand just wait for the festival of Navratri to eat at different food stalls and restaurants. Looking at this great excitement of Durga Puja among the devotees, this year the famous and the oldest bakery of the city Flurys has hand-crafted Goddess Durga in chocolate.
Yes, you heard it right. This Navratri, Maa Durga is made out of chocolate, a feast for your eyes.
According to the bakery, the chocolate idol is four feet tall and is made out of 25 Kilos of dark Belgian chocolate with a hint of gold dust to adorn the embroidery of the Goddess’ sari.
The idol took about 15 days to make. Also interestingly, the bakery chefs had to visit Kumartuli in order to meet the artists who can sculpt the idols, then various researches were carried out on how to handcraft the chocolate idol.
Another problem that the chefs faced was maintaining the melting point of chocolate as it was important to prevent the idol from cracking.
Cocoa butter was used to solidly the idol and to give it a glossy texture. Other than this, the idol was also given a traditional touch in the design of the motifs.
According to the bakery, after Vijay Dashami the idol will be immersed in milk and a milkshake will be made which will then be distributed among underprivileged children.
Many of the customers were seen clicking selfies with the chocolate idol which is on display and is placed at the counter.
Pooja Das, a regular customer said, “We generally go out for lunch on these five days, but when we came here, we got greeted by this beautiful display. It’s is very creative.” Another customer, Romita Mukherjee said, “Chocolate Durga, never seen anything like this before. My friend came to this place yesterday and saw this beautiful idol. She then told me about this and here I am. This is really something different.”
