Actor Rajinikanth to receive Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2019

The Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2019 which was to be announced last year, was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mumbai:  Actor-politician Rajinikanth will be conferred with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his contribution to the world of Indian cinema in 2019. Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar announced the news on Twitter on Thursday. “Happy to announce Dadasaheb Phalke award for 2019 to one of the greatest actors in history of Indian cinema Rajnikant ji,” Javadekar tweeted.

In his tweet, Javadekar talked about Rajinis’ contribution as an actor, producer, and screenwriter, and added, “His contribution as actor, producer and screenwriter has been iconic I thank Jury @ashabhosle@SubhashGhai1@Mohanlal @Shankar_Live#BiswajeetChatterjee.”

Indian singers Asha Bhosle and Shankar Mahadevan, actors Mohanlal and Biswajeet, and filmmaker Subhash Ghai were members of the jury that selected Rajinikanth for the award.

After the announcement, many political leaders like PM Narendra Modi and JP Nadda extended their wishes to the superstar. PM Modi took to Twitter and said, “Popular across generations, a body of work few can boast of, diverse roles and an endearing personality…that’s Shri Rajinikanth Ji for you. It is a matter of immense joy that Thalaiva has been conferred with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. Congratulations to him.”

National President of Bharatiya Janata Party, JP Nadda also congratulated Thalaiva and said, “Hearty congratulations to versatile actor Thalaiva Rajinikanth  Ji on receiving the most prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award. With his outstanding work on-screen & philanthropic efforts off-screen, he has won crores of hearts. His contribution to the Indian cinema is phenomenal.”

Rajinikanth, a 70-year-old star has featured in Bollywood as well as South Indian films and has a large fan base in India and abroad. The ‘Robot’ and ‘2.0’ star, made his debut way back in 1975 with K Balachander’s ‘Apoorva Ragangal’ and has been in the Tamil film industry for more than 45 years. Among his many hits, there are cinematic gems like ‘Billu’, ‘Muthu’, ‘Baashha’, ‘Sivaji’, and ‘Enthiran’.

Thalaiva thanked the Government of India through a tweet and dedicated the award to those who have been part of his journey.

Rajinikanth was last seen in AR Murugadoss’s ‘Darbar’. Currently, he is shooting for his upcoming film ‘Annaatthe’.

The Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2019 which was to be announced last year, was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic, as were the National Film Awards for 2019. The Dadasaheb Phalke award is conferred to individuals for their excellence in cinematic achievement. It is the highest award in the Indian film industry and is awarded by the Indian government. The recipient of the 2018 award was Amitabh Bachchan, Rajinikanth’s co-star from ‘Hum’.
