Agra’s Mayor, Naveen Jain on Friday (February 12) requested the Union government to gives access to 61 plants to use Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) so as to save Taj Mahal’s beauty due to lack of water.

Jain added that a lack of water will damage its foundation and thus cause huge damage to the monument. According to the mayor, out of 90 runnels, water from 29 runnels is filtered using Sewage Treatment Plant but the remaining 61 have still not got the permission to use STP.

Taj Mahal’s foundation has been made from ebony wood which needs a constant flow of water to remain firm and durable. This was done as the soil was clayey and only ebony wood had the characteristics to support such a weight.

During the past years, the Yamuna has been drifting further away from the Taj Mahal which has been a cause of worry as the lack of water would mean that algae would destroy the foundation.

The Archeological Survey of India (ASI) had drafted a plan to carve a canal out of Yamuna so that the woods receive adequate water supply to stay firm.
