Activist Anannyah Kumari Alex who was the first person from the transgender community in Kerala to file nomination for Assembly elections was found dead in her Kochi apartment on Tuesday.

Police said Anannyah, a transwoman who worked as celebrity make-up artist, radio jockey and stage show anchor, is suspected to have died by suicide. She had undergone gender reassignment surgery in June 2020 and recently accused the hospital and doctor of conducting a failed surgery that resulted in tremendous pain.

Complaining that she was unable to carry on with work even a year after the surgery, Anannyah called it a case of medical negligence and demanded justice. According to media reports, she was also under financial stress.

Anannyah, 28, created history when she filed nomination for the 2021 Kerala elections as a candidate for the Democratic Social Justice Party in Vengara constituency in Malappuram district.

She, however, suspended her campaign the day before elections, alleging that she had received death threats from her own party leaders. Since the deadline to withdraw nomination had passed by then, she had publicly appealed to voters not to cast their ballots for the DSJP.

The post-mortem will be conducted at the Government Medical College in Kalamassery, The News Minute reported.
