New Delhi: Arpita Mukherjee, a little known name in the film industry, shot to limelight after the school recruitment scam unfolded in the state of West Bengal. Considered a close aide of former minister Partha Chatterjee, Mukherjee faced Enforcement Directorate raids last week, when Rs 21 crore cash was unearthed from premises linked to her.

Following the raids, Chatterjee, a minister in the Mamata Banerjee government, was arrested by the probe agency on July 23 for his alleged involvement in the teacher recruitment scam. Along with the cash, a huge amount of gold jewellery was recovered from an apartment linked to Arpita Mukherjee.

Mukherjee, who has denied any links to the seized cash and gold, on Friday vehemently protested and refused to come out of the car when she was taken to a hospital for a court-mandated check up in Kolkata. Partha Chatterjee and Arpita Mukherjee are supposed to undergo mandatory health checkups every 48 hours, according to the court orders.

When the ED officials brought both of them to the ESI hospital in Joka for checkups, Mukherjee was not willing to leave the car initially. She cried, resisted, pushed the security officials and flapped her hands and when she was forced to get out, she sat on the ground. Eventually, Mukherjee was taken inside the hospital in a wheelchair.

Who Is Arpita Mukherjee?

Arpita Mukherjee is model and an actor who is mostly seen in side roles in few Indian movies. She came in contact with Chatterjee while working as a model at a local club in the minister’s neighbourhood during puja. Arpita went on to be engaged with a puja committee that was patronised by Partha Chatterjee.

While TMC and its leaders have denied any connection with Arpita, pictures that went viral on social media showed her sharing stage with TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee, Partha Chatterjee and party state president Subrata Bakshi, at a durga puja committee event.

Rejecting any links to Arpita, TMC MP Santanu Sen had said, “I don’t know any TMC worker or leader named Arpita Mukherjee.”

Arpita’s Links To West Bengal School Recruitment Scam

Last week, the Enforcement Directorate had recovered over Rs 21 crore from her premises. In total, nearly Rs 50 crore in cash has been seized so far. According to ED sources, Arpita Mukherjee has confessed during interrogation that the cash recovered from premises linked to her belonged to Chatterjee. She has claimed that she doesn’t know where it came from.

The stacks of cash were recovered from the apartment in Belgharia on Wednesday, and after overnight counting, it amounted to Rs 27.90 crore, they said. The investigators are still ascertaining the value of the gold jewellery, believed to be in kgs, they added.

The Enforce Directorate raided the third apartment linked to Arpita Mukherjee, the close associate of arrested West Bengal minister Partha Chatterjee, in the city’s Chinar Park area after recovering around Rs 28 crore cash from another flat belonging to her.

The raid by the ED, which is probing the money trail of the school jobs scam, was conducted late Thursday evening, an official of the agency said. The details of the Chinar Park flat was provided by Mukherjee herself during interrogation by the ED earlier in the day.
