After tieing the knot on July 7, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann will become the third Indian Chief Minister to get married, while still holding office. In the past, Virbhadra Singh, who was the former Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh and Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, former Assam Chief Minister, also got married while they were holding the post of the chief minister.
Virbhadra Singh, who was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1962, 1967 and 1971, first became the Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister in April 1983 and held the post till March 1990. It was in this period that he got married to Prathiba Singh. The two got married in 1985 and it was Singh’s second marriage. Prathiba is currently a Lok Sabha MP from Mandi.
When Mahanta became the Chief Minister of Assam in December 1985, he became the youngest in the country to hold the office, at the age of 35. He held the office till November 1990 and it was at this period that he got married to Jayashree Goswami Mahanta, in April 1988. Jayashree, who is a writer, represented Assam in the Rajya Sabha between 1999 and 2001. She was also awarded India’s fourth-highest civilian award, the Padma Shri in 2018.
Meanwhile, the current Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann is getting married to Dr Gurpreet Kaur, who is reported to have done her MBBS from Maharishi Markandeshwar University at Mullana in Haryana in 2018. As per reports, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is expected to attend the wedding ceremony.
