New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) may appoint a deputy Chief Minister from the Garhwal region along with the swearing-in of Pushkar Singh Dhami as CM, sources told ANI on Sunday. Dhami who was elected as CM on Saturday of the hill state is a Rajput from the Kumaon region.
The sources said that the party was discussing appointing a Deputy CM to maintain a balance between the Garhwal and Kumaon regions.
This development comes just hours ahead of Dhami’s oath.
Even Dhami’s appointment is seen as an attempt by the BJP to strike a balance in the state as the current state party president Madan Kaushik is a Brahmin and hails from the Garhwal region.
Several ministers and MLAs also expressed their displeasure over the appointment of Dhami who has never served even as a minister in the state government.
The 45-year-old was elected ahead of experienced leaders such as Satpal Maharaj and Dhan Singh Rawat.
He was elected as the CM on Saturday during the BJP legislature meet at Dehradun which was attended by the state MLAs.
BJP’s central observer and Union Minister Narendra Singh Tomar and state in-charge Dushyant Kumar Gautam were also present in the meeting.
Dhami also visited his predecessors Tirath Singh Rawat and Trivendra Singh Rawat at their residences on Sunday and visited the Shaheed Smarak in Dehradun.
