New Delhi: BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi has shown his support for the Caste-based census, ahead of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s meeting with Prime Minister Narender Modi on Monday.
Sushil Modi, who was a former deputy chief minister in Nitish’s cabinet for over a decade, said that despite issues in conducting a caste-based census, BJP is in its favour.
“There are many technical and practical difficulties in conducting caste census, yet BJP is in support of it in principle,” he said in a tweet.
The Bihar leader also said, “At the time of the last census of 1931,which was done under the British Raj, Bihar, Jharkhand and Orissa were one. The census of only 22 castes was done in the population of about 1 crore of Bihar at that time. Now after 90 years the area has undergone a huge transformation in terms of economic, social, geographical and political conditions.”
The voice for caste-based census has been raised in many states and Nitish Kumar has been one of the most vocal supporters for a nationwide census, a demand he has articulated on many occasions.
The growing congestion in the quota categories has triggered fresh demands for an empirical study that could provide the bulwark to back policy changes to promote diversity.
