New Delhi: A day after the Kolkata Police formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the fake vaccination drive conducted in the city by a man allegedly masquerading as an IAS officer, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari demanded a probe by central agencies into the matter.

On Friday (June 25), Suvendu wrote a letter to Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan demanding central agencies to probe the vaccine fraud case.

Suvendu said that one Debanjan Deb impersonating as an IAS officer working as Joint Commissioner of Kolkata Municipal Corporation has been holding illegal vaccination camps in Ward No 107 of Kasba right in the heart of Kolkata under the banner of KMC.

”Decorated with trademark blue and white balloons characteristic of the TMC government events, these camps had already been held in Amherst Street, Sonarpur, and hundreds of persons have already been inoculated in these camps,” said Adhikari.

”If these shots were really Covishield vaccines as claimed by the accused, then this raises a big question on the pilferage of COVID-19 vaccines from government stock”, he added.

”If these were not COVID-19 vaccines, immediate investigation needs to be done on what was being administered on such a large scale”, said Suvendu alleging that this cannot happen without the complicity of top civic authorities.

”If people who thought to have been vaccinated died from this medicine or contracted COVID-19 and died from the disease, then that would have severely dented credibility of this historic vaccination drive being undertaken by our government. Therefore, a thorough investigation needs to be done, prioritizing public health safety,” the BJP leader said in the letter.

Earlier the police have formed a SIT to investigate the matter.

IMA State Secretary and TMC MP Dr Santanu Sen said, “When we realised that he (Debanjan Deb) is a fraud with bad intention, without wasting time, we lodged an FIR with Muchipara police station and requested them to take stringent action.”

“We demand a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry in a fake COVID vaccination drive case in Kolkata. The probe is underway but the matter requires CBI inquiry as it involves officials. We also want the Centre to look into it,” said Sayantan Basu, West Bengal BJP General Secretary.

Trinamool Congress MP Mimi Chakraborty on Wednesday claimed to have been duped by a man who posed as an IAS officer and requested the actor-turned-politician to be present at a COVID-19 vaccination drive organised by him in Kolkata.
