Draupadi Murmu, NDA Presidential Candidate, Gets Z+ Security Cover

The Union Home Ministry directed the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to deploy its VIP security protection team to take charge of Murmu's security.

New Delhi: The Centre has accorded a Z+ security cover of CRPF commandos to the NDA’s presidential candidate Draupadi Murmu, officials said on Wednesday.

The armed squad took over the security of Murmu, 64, early Wednesday morning, a senior officer told PTI.

BJP president JP Nadda announced the candidature of Murmu, a party leader from Odisha who served as Jharkhand governor, at a press conference on Monday night following a meeting of the party’s parliamentary board, which included Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior leaders.

Officials said soon after this announcement, the Union Home Ministry directed the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to deploy its VIP security protection team to take charge of Murmu’s security.

Tribal leader and former Jharkhand Governor Draupadi Murmu If elected would become the first tribal President of India. She is a former Governor of Jharkhand and a former Odisha minister.

BJP-led NDA on Tuesday declared Draupadi Murmu as their presidential candidate. While, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh announced that former minister of finance and external affairs Yashwant Sinha will be the common candidate of the Opposition parties for the presidential election, which will take place on July 18, 2022.

Murmu is likely to file her nomination on June 25, reported ANI. The late date for filing nominations for the Presidential election is June 29.
