New Delhi: A China Eastern Airlines plane that crashed in March killing 132 people, appears to have been intentionally flown into the mountainside by someone at the controls, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday, citing American officials who analysed data from the flight’s black box.

The Boeing 737-800 was cruising at high altitude when it suddenly pitched into a near-vertical descent, plummeting into a mountain at extreme speed. Data from a black box recovered in the crash suggests inputs to the controls pushed the plane into the fatal dive, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported.

The China Eastern Airlines flight MU5735 was flying from Kunming to Guangzhou when it was crashed outside the city of Wuzhou in the Guangxi region. All 132 on board, including 123 passengers and nine crew members, were dead in the crash.

The WSJ in its report cited unnamed American officials as saying that the flight information recorded in the black box suggested that the plane did what it was told to do by someone in the cockpit. He also indicated that the preliminary investigation did not find any indication of a technical malfunction.

China Eastern flight MU5735 went into a near vertical nosedive less than an hour before it was meant to arrive at Guangzhou, with flight tracking and at least one purported video of its final moments showing the plane plummeting to the ground at an almost 90-degree angle, reported the WSJ.

The report also clearly stated that there is also a possibility that someone else on the plane could have broken into the cockpit and deliberately caused the crash.

The China Eastern Airlines plane crash was the worst air disaster China has seen in the past 28 years. However, in mid-April, China Eastern resumed use of the 737-800 planes.
