Commonwealth Gold Medalist Among Five Held For Bank Dacoity In Hisar

Chandigarh: A former Commonwealth gold-medalist named Soni has been arrested by Haryana Police in connection with a bank dacoity in Hisar. Apart from Soni, four other accomplices of his were also arrested from Hisar.

Soni, who represented India in under 73 kg judo at the Commonwealth Youth Games held in the Bahamas was the key conspirator and head of the gang which executed the bank robbery. The arrests came in connection with the robbery at a Union Bank branch of Azad Nagar in Hisar on April 18. The police produced them before a local court in Hisar. The court sent them to eight days of police remand.

Those arrested have been identified as the main accused Soni, a resident of Hisar, who is a junior Commonwealth Games gold medallist. Soni is also a constable with the Indo Tibetan Border Police. Others who have been arrested are Sonu, from Jind, Pradeep also from Hisar, and two of them are from the Sonepat district named Naveen and Vikas.

The Superintendent of Police (SP) Lokender Kumar said they arrested the five of them for a dacoity of Rs. 16.19 lakh from the Azad Nagar branch of Union Bank. “We got hold of the main conspirator Soni from near Guru Jambeshwar University and recovered Rs. 60,000 and a gun, which he had snatched from the bank’s security guard during the robbery. We have also recovered Rs. 2.40 lakh from the five accused so far,” police said.

“During the investigations, it was found that Soni used to come for Judo practice at Hisar’s Mahavir stadium. Here he came in contact with Pradeep. It was Soni who made the plan which he executed with four accomplices,” the SP added.

On April 18, five assailants armed with weapons carried out a dacoity of nearly Rs 16.19 lakh from the Azad Nagar branch. While leaving, they also took away five mobile phones from the bank employees.

Sources in the police said, Soni, has earned prize money of about Rs 50 lakh from the game. The arrest of the main accused Soni and four others were made on the basis of a tip-off from the sources at Guru Jambheshwar University of Science and Technology in Hisar.
