Congress’ Muslim Face Naseemuddin Siddiqui May Follow Swami Prasad Maurya Into Samajwadi Party

Naseemuddin Siddiqui is the chairman of the media and communication in Congress, but several times he expressed his desire to work with the high command and that has not been heard from a very long time.

New Delhi: Uttar Pradesh is witnessing a lot of party hopping with leaders leaving one outfit to join another as Assembly election dates approach. After Swami Prasad Maurya, the former state Labour Minister, resigned from the Yogi Adityanath cabinet on Tuesday, to join the Samajwadi Party, a senior Congress leader Naseemuddin Siddiqui is likely to follow suit.

Considered a strong OBC face, the five-term MLA Maurya joined the Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party (SP) giving a big jolt to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Maurya was a minister in the Mayawati-led government and the leader of opposition earlier. His decision to dump BJP and for the Samajwadi Party may further strengthen Akhilesh Yadav’s party among the Dalits and the OBCs.

After bagging Maurya, the Samajwadi Party is going to rope in Congress leader Naseemuddin Siddiqui. If this happens, then it will be the second major setback to the Congress in less than a week. Earlier, Akhilesh Yadav had inducted veteran Congress leader Imran Masood from Saharanpur into his party.

Nasimudin Siddiqui, for now, has denied such speculations and has not expressed a wish to join the SP.

But Swami Prasad Maurya can act as a bridge in bringing his former partner Naseemuddin Siddiqui to the SP. Both Swami Prasad Maurya and Naseemuddin Siddiqui had worked closely in Mayawati’s government. Swami Prasad Maurya later joined the BJP but is now with the SP.

Naseemuddin is the chairman of the Congress media and communication unit in the state, but several times he has expressed his desire to work with the high command which have been ignored. Now that Swami Prasad Maurya has joined the SP, the speculations about Nassemuddin following him have intensified.

A few days back, Naseemuddin tweeted that he has family like relations with Swami Prasad Maurya and both the leaders had met as well.

A Big Blow For Congress

The Congress is struggling to get its house in order for the crucial Assembly election. Naseemuddin joining Samajwadi Party will be a major blow to the Congress. A few months ago, he had met the top leadership of Samajwadi Party, but things did not work out.

Now that Maurya has decided to ride the bicycle (SP’s election symbol), the chances of Siddiqui joining Akhilesh’s party have increased.

Naseemuddin Siddiqui, A Big Face For Muslim Voters

Naseemuddin joined the Bahujan Samaj Party and contested the 1991 Assembly election from Banda. He won and became the first Muslim MLA from the party. Siddiqui also held powerful and important portfolios during the BSP regime and was also considered as a strong Muslim face of the party.

After BSP’s poor performance in the 2017 Assembly election, Mayawati removed him from all party posts in UP and sent him to Madhya Pradesh.
