New Delhi: India on Thursday reported 42,982 new Covid-19 cases spike from 42,625 reported a day earlier. The cases went up slightly by 300 as compared to Thursday. The number of deaths reported today went down to 533, compared to previous day’s tally of 562. This was the sixth day in a row that deaths remained under the 600-mark.

India is seeing a surge in cases after new infections had dipped below 30,000 daily cases after 132 days on July 27.

41,726 recoveries were reported in the same period taking the total tally to 3,09,74,748.

With these additions, the total number of cases reported since the start of the pandemic has risen to 3,18,12,114 while the death toll stands at 4,26,290.

Active cases in the country have increased from 4,10,353 on Wednesday to 3,18,12,114 on Thursday.

47,48,93,363 samples have been tested so far since the start of the pandemic last year, said the India Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

Out of this, 16,64,030 were tested in the past 24 hours alone.

The new infections had stayed above 200,000-mark since April 15. The new cases have been increasing at an alarming pace since the country broke the one lakh case barrier on April 4 when it reported 1,03,558 new Covid-19 cases.

Within a fortnight, the numbers doubled, which sounded alarm bells throughout the country as medical infrastructure, doctors and patients grappled with resource crunch. India had crossed the grim milestone of two crores on May 4.

However, cases have started to come down since June, with many states gradually allowing relaxations in lockdown curbs. Meanwhile, Kerala has reintroduced a strict lockdown in the state after the number of new cases rose above 20,000 cases.

The rise in the daily Covid-19 cases is mainly because of a big surge in Kerala, which continues to account for over 50% of India’s new cases for the second straight day. Kerala Reported 22,056 daily Covid 19 cases on 28 July and 22,129 Covid 19 cases on July 27.
