Covid Scare In Parliament: 718 Staffers Test Positive Ahead Of Budget Session

718 staffers have tested positive in the Parliament house complex since December 4. These include 204 people in the Rajya Sabha secretariat. The rest of the cases were reported from the Lok Sabha secretariat and allied services.

New Delhi: More than 300 Parliament staffers tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday, as per the reports. With this, the total tally of staffers positive for COVID-19  in the parliament has now reached 718.

As per the reports, 718 have tested positive in the Parliament house complex since December 4. These include 204 people in the Rajya Sabha secretariat. The rest of the cases were reported from the Lok Sabha secretariat and allied services.

Earlier in random testing in parliament on January 6 and 7, over 400 staff members have tested positive for the novel coronavirus, however, most cases were reported to be asymptomatic. With staffers in the parliament testing positive for the COVID-19, authorities are concerned about the prevalence of the infection ahead of the crucial budget session, scheduled to start on January 31.

On Tuesday, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla inspected the Parliament House Complex to take stock of the health safety-related measures in view of the increasing number of coronavirus cases across the country. Speakers of both the houses, Om Birla and Rajya Sabha chairman M Venkaiah Naidu, had also requested and ensured that all staff workers were vaccinated with two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.

COVID-19 protocols are likely to continue within the parliament implementing stricter norms and refusing entry to visitors and people on casual passes. 

Meanwhile, India reported 2,47,417 fresh cases of Coronavirus in the last 24 hours. Positive cases today are 27 per cent higher than yesterday’s 1,94,720 cases. As per the Ministry of Health guidelines issued most people have been encouraged to work from home amid increasing COVID cases and omicron threat.
