Delhi Reports 21,259 New Covid-19 Cases, 23 Deaths In Last 24 Hours

The Omicron variant of the COVID-19 virus has led to a massive spike in the number of cases across India. Delhi, too, has witnessed a big surge as the third wave of the pandemic leads to more curbs across the country to control the spread of the deadly virus.

New Delhi: Delhi recorded 21,259 new COVID-19 cases and 23 related-deaths in the last 24 hours. The active cases in the national capital now stand at 74,881. The positivity rate has risen to 25.65 per cent. Amidst the high number of cases and positivity rate, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday denied that the State government will impose a lockdown in the national capital despite a steady rise in the number of COVID-19 cases.

“About 22,000 COVID cases with a positivity rate of 24-25% in the last few days…Don’t worry, we will not impose lockdown…At the DDMA meet we requested Central govt officials to cover the entire NCR for restrictions, they assured us on the same, ” assured Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal while interacting with the media in New Delhi.

Take a look at the COVID related statistics in the national capital:

The Omicron variant of the COVID-19 virus has led to a massive spike in the number of cases across India. Delhi, too, has witnessed a big surge as the third wave of the pandemic leads to more curbs across the country to control the spread of the deadly virus.

While several models and studies have predicted that the Omicron variant will lead to a sudden increase and a similar fall in the number of cases, there is no unanimity about when the peak will occur.

Even the Arvind Kejriwal government in Delhi is speaking in two voices about the peak and when it is likely to hit the national capital.

While Chief Minister Kejriwal claims it is “difficult to predict when the third wave of infections will peak”, his Health Minister Satyendar Jain sounded the alarm bell on Monday (January 10) about the pandemic.

According to a study by IIT Kanpur professor Manindra Agrawal, India will be hit by the third wave peak in late January. Agarwal stated that the country will witness more cases during the third wave as compared to the second wave.

But the third wave will also see a sharp decline in the number of cases after the peak and will in all probability be over by the end of March 2022, he added.

Claiming that Delhi will report almost 40,000 cases per day at its peak which is expected to hit in mid-January, he added that other bigger cities like Mumbai and Kolkata, too, will see the peak around the same time.
