Chandigarh: After Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Bengaluru, Delhi-Srinagar has for the first time become the third busiest air traffic route in the country – courtesy increased flow of tourists to this hill destination this year.

While, Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Bengaluru are the busiest air routes owing to the fact that the three cities are big business and commercial hubs, and passengers fly in and out of these destinations.

Due to the accessibility of getting to the Valley within two hours, Srinagar is the most popular tourist destination, especially for those boarding from the international airport in Delhi. In the normal course, the Delhi-Srinagar flight never figured among the top ten air routes in terms of traffic.

According to the figures of Director General Civil Aviation (DGCA), 2.74 lakh tourists/passengers flew into Srinagar from Delhi in the month of April 2. This is the busiest air route anywhere in the country after Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Bengaluru.

According to the Union tourism ministry data, the number of tourists who travelled to Kashmir from January to May this year is close to seven lakh tourists which is five times more than the previous years, most of them travelled by air.

Delhi-Goa, And Mumbai-Goa Too Among Busiest Air Traffic Routes

Also, Delhi-Goa and Mumbai-Goa too have figured among the top ten busy air routes this year for the first time. Goa-Mumbai accounted for 1.62 lakh passengers and tourists in April this year while Delhi-Goa accounted for 1.58 lakh passengers and tourists in the same month.

Earlier, Hyderabad-Bengaluru and Delhi-Ahmedabad used to figure among the top ten air traffic routes. But due to an increase in the flow of tourists, a result of two-and-a-half-year fatigue of staying indoors during Covid-19, there is a heavy rush of holiday-goers to tourist destinations. This is true not just for those travelling to tourist destinations within India but also for those travelling internationally.

The domestic passengers who boarded various flights in the country between January 2021 and April 2021 were 2.91 crore passengers.  However, this year, the number of domestic passengers who boarded various flights in the country stood at 3.58 crores, a whopping 59 lakhs more than the previous year. Half of this number, which is about 30 lakhs, is being attributed to the increased flow of tourists by DGCA.
