‘DOLO 650’ Trends On Social Media, Manufacturers Become Billionaire In No Time

COVID-19 pandemic has made healthcare and pharma players billionaires in the past two years. And now, the makers of Dolo-650, the most prescribed medicine have admitted to have sold a whopping 350 crore pills since the COVID outbreak back in March 2020.

Fever, one of the most common symptoms of Covid-19, has pushed sales of this oval-shaped white pill to treble in the last two years, despite the fact that paracetamol pills are the most commonly used cold and fever treatments.

According to data-based research by IQVIA, Dolo 650, the most commonly prescribed medicine for treating fever in COVID-19 patients, registered a staggering turnover of Rs 307 crore in 2021.

Not just that, Dolo 650 has even been trending on Twitter since the second week of January 2022. Dolo 650 is a tablet that is a common painkiller that has been seen in every household used to treat aches, pains and fever. Twitter users coined the hashtag # Dolo650, which is currently trending.

Dolo 650 Sales Break Records During Pandemic

Before the outbreak of Covid-19 in 2019, India sold around 75 million strips of Dolo pills, according to statistics from the research firm IQVIA. The medicine’s annual sales increased to 94 million strips (each strip containing 15 tablets), or 1.4 billion tablets.

By November 2021, it had risen to 145 million strips (twice as much as in 2019) or 2.2 billion tablets. As a result, during both pandemic years, more than 350 crore Dolo tablets were sold. 

According to the company’s website, it has an annual turnover of Rs 2,700 crore, which includes exports of Rs 920 crore.  

What Has Made Dolo 650 A Cult Favourite?

Micro Labs Ltd. manufactures Dolo with 650 milligrams (mg) of paracetamol, while most other brands sell their paracetamol brand with 500 mg salt. Crocin or Dolo or Calpol – these are different brand names given by pharma companies that sell the same salt, under their copyright. 

Dolo’s offering of the 650 milligrams (MG) category and the perception that it’s more effective on fever. Dolo’s popularity compared to other paracetamol tablets is unexplained since all paracetamols are alike.
