Draupadi Murmu Named Presidential Candidate Of BJP-led NDA

Draupadi Murmu will be the first tribal woman to occupy the top constitutional post if she is elected, a strong possibility as numbers are stacked in the favour of the BJP-led NDA.

New Delhi: The ruling NDA, led by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), on Tuesday announced former Jharkhand Governor Draupadi Murmu as its Presidential candidate following the party’s parliamentary board meeting. Murmu is likely to file her nomination on June 25, ANI cited its sources as saying.

The meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was held at party headquarters in Delhi. Party president JP Nadda, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari were among the leaders present at the meeting.

India Ahead was first (in May) to announce that 64-year-old Draupadi Murmu could be the NDA choice.

Murmu will be the first tribal woman to occupy the top constitutional post if she is elected, a strong possibility as numbers are stacked in the favour of the BJP-led NDA.

The opposition had earlier announced Yashwant Sinha as its joint candidate for the post. The poll is slated for July 18.

All About Draupadi Murmu

Draupadi Murmu was born on June 20, 1958, in Odisha to Biranchi Narayan Tudu. She belongs to the Santhal tribal family of Uparbeda village in the Kusumi Block of Mayurbhanj district in Odisha. She was later married to Shyam Charam Murmu.

Murmu worked as an honorary assistant teacher at Sri Aurobindo Integral Education and Research, Rairangpur and as a junior assistant in the irrigation department. This was before she began her political career in 1997.

In 1997, she was elected councillor in the Rajrangpur district of Odisha. The same year, Murmu also became the Vice-President of the Scheduled Tribes Morcha of the Odisha unit of the BJP.

Murmu has remained a Cabinet Minister in Naveen Patnaik’s government. From 2002 to 2009 she served as BJP District President of Mayurbhanj and again in 2013. She has been a two-time BJP MLA from Odisha.

Draupadi Murmu headed the Mayurbhanj district unit of the BJP in Odisha and represented the Rairangpur region in the Odisha Legislative Assembly. The Odisha Legislative Assembly honoured her with the Neelkanth Award for Best Legislator.

She has also been the first woman governor of Jharkhand. Murmu was administered the oath by Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court Virender Singh.
