EXCLUSIVE | Omicron Might Be More Dangerous Than Delta, Says Doctor Who First Raised Alarm Over New Covid Variant

As per the doctor, vaccination does not ensure 100 per cent protection against the Omicron variant. Vaccines can only protect from severity of the disease.

New Delhi: The Omicron variant of coronavirus might be more dangerous than the previously discovered and still prevalent Delta strain as cases in South Africa are doubling, said Dr Angelique Coetzee, the South African doctor who first raised alarm over Omicron.

In an exclusive interview with India Ahead’s Editor-in-chief Bhupendra Chaubey, Coetzee said active tracing will play a vital role in controlling the spread of the variant.

As per the doctor, vaccination does not ensure 100 per cent protection against the Omicron variant. Vaccines can only protect from the severity of the disease, she said.

South Africa first reported the Omicron variant to the World Health Organization (WHO) on November 24. Since then nearly 40 countries, including India, UK and United States, have reported cases of the new strain.

Following the detection of the variant, several countries imposed travel restrictions and ban on flights and passengers from South Africa, which was called unfair. Similarly, critical of travel bans, Dr Coetzee said instead of closing borders, people should stay home to prevent the Omicron variant from spreading.

She further warned of infection in children, however, she clarified that it won’t be severe. “Children can be superspreads of infection so they should be kept home till the virus flattens out,” Dr Angelique Coetzee told India Ahead.

India till now has confirmed the presence of three Omicron cases in the country. The first two cases of Omicron strain were confirmed in two individuals in Karnataka on December 2. While the third case is detected earlier today as a Gujarat man who returned from Zimbabwe has been found infected with the Omicron variant of COVID-19.

Although, India has stepped up testing and surveillance of all incoming international passengers, especially from at-risk nations since the Omicron variant was first detected in South Africa.
