Kolkata: Former Goa chief minister Luizinho Faleiro, who resigned from Congress, joined the Trinamool Congress (TMC) along with three others on Wednesday. Besides Faleiro, former Ponda MLA Lavoo Mamledar, Sahitya Akademi awardee N Shivdas and environmentalist Rajendra Shivaji Kakodkar were among nine other leaders who came into the TMC fold.

Banerjee welcomed the leaders into the party fold and said the move will help usher in a “new dawn” for Goa. “It’s a matter of great pride for me to welcome Former Goa CM, 7-time MLA and stalwart Goan leader Shri @luizinhofaleiro to the Trinamool Congress family. Together we will stand up for every Goan, fight divisive forces and work towards ushering in a NEW DAWN for Goa,” said Banerjee on Twitter.

“I am also pleased to welcome Former MLA from MGP Shri Lavoo Mamledar, Congress General Secretaries Yatish Naik & Vijay Poi and Congress Secretaries Mario Pinto De Santana & Anand Naik to the party,” she said.

Along with the four leaders, Banerjee also announced the joining of Sahitya Akademi Award winner poet Shivdas Sonu Naik, South Goa Advocates Association president Antonio Monteiro Clovis Da Costa and Rajendra Shivaji Kakodkar. “I welcome all of them to our family!” she said.

Meanwhile, addressing a press conference, Congress leader Kapil Sibal said, “Our people are leaving us. Sushmita Dev left, Luizinho Falerio, Jitin Prasada has now got the cabinet berth. The question is, why are they leaving? We need to ask ourself, possibility is that even we are at fault.”

Faleiro, who reached Kolkata on Tuesday, met some of the top TMC leaders last night.

Addressing a press conference in Panaji on Monday after submitting his resignation, Faleiro lauded West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s ‘streetfighter’ spirit and said, “Mamata Banerjee has fought and succeeded in stopping Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from entering Bengal. She symbolises woman empowerment – she can bring the country back on the track of development and progress.”

Faleiro, who previously served two terms as a Chief Minister of Goa, submitted his resignation on Monday as an MLA to the Speaker of Goa Assembly ahead of state Assembly elections next year.

All India Congress Committee (AICC) in charge of Goa Dinesh Gundu Rao had confirmed to ANI that Faleiro has given resignation from the primary membership of the party as well.

Faleiro is the second Congress leader outside West Bengal who will be joining the TMC. He was recently appointed as the Chairman of the Election Coordination Committee for Goa Assembly polls and was All India Congress Committee (AICC) in charge of North-Eastern states.

Earlier, former Congress MP from Assam’s Silchar and ex-president of All India Mahila Congress, Sushmita Dev had joined the TMC in August this year. She has been assigned to look after TMC’s affairs in Tripura.

A month later Sushmita Dev was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from West Bengal.
