Gen Bipin Rawat Dies In Chopper Crash: PM Modi, President Express Anguish; Tributes Pour In From ‘Shocked’ Citizens And Leaders

Political leaders across party lines expressed their shock as they condoled the demise of Gen Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika Rawat and 11 others.

New Delhi: CDS General Bipin Rawat, his wife and 11 other Defence officials were killed after the IAF helicopter carrying them crashed near Coonoor in Nilgiris district in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday. The Indian Air Force confirmed the demise saying, “With deep regret, it has now been ascertained that Gen Bipin Rawat, Mrs Madhulika Rawat and 11 other persons on board have died in the unfortunate accident. Gp Capt Varun Singh SC, Directing Staff at DSSC with injuries is currently under treatment at Military Hospital, Wellington.”

The helicopter was carrying nine passengers and five crew members. The passengers included General Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika Rawat, Brigadier LS Lidder, Lt. Colonel Harjinder Singh, Naik Gursewak Singh, Naik Jitendra Kumar, Lance Naik Vivek Kumar, Lance Naik B Sai Teja and Havaldar Satpal.

Soon after the news spread, political leaders across party lines expressed their shock as they condoled the demise of Gen Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika and 11 others.

Condoling the tragic demise, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “Gen Bipin Rawat was an outstanding soldier. A true patriot, he greatly contributed to modernising our armed forces and security apparatus. His insights and perspectives on strategic matters were exceptional. His passing away has saddened me deeply. Om Shanti.”

President Ram Nath Kovind said, “I am shocked and anguished over the untimely demise of Gen. Bipin Rawat and his wife, Madhulika ji. The nation has lost one of its bravest sons. His four decades of selfless service to the motherland was marked by exceptional gallantry and heroism. My condolences to his family.”

Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also took to Twitter to express his condolences/ “Deeply anguished by the sudden demise of Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat, his wife and 11 other Armed Forces personnel in an extremely unfortunate helicopter accident today in Tamil Nadu. His untimely death is an irreparable loss to our Armed Forces and the country,” he wrote.

Remembering Gen Rawat as one of the bravest Indian soldiers, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said, “A very sad day for the nation as we have lost our CDS, General Bipin Rawat Ji in a very tragic accident. He was one of the bravest soldiers, who has served the motherland with utmost devotion. His exemplary contributions & commitment cannot be put into words. I am deeply pained.”

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said, “I extend my condolences to the family of Gen Bipin Rawat and his wife. This is an unprecedented tragedy and our thoughts are with their family in this difficult time. Heartfelt condolences also to all others who lost their lives. India stands united in this grief.”

Union Minister for External Affairs S Jaishankar said, “Deeply shocked at tragic demise of CDS General Bipin Rawat and his wife. We worked closely together in the last few years. It is a huge loss to the nation.”

Indian cricketer Virat Kohli also offered condolences as he said, “Deeply saddened by the untimely demise of CDS Bipin Rawat ji and other officials in a tragic helicopter crash. My deepest condolences to the friends & family members.”

Former cricketer Virendra Sehwag also paid tribute to Gen Rawat, saying, “Extremely pained to hear about the passing away of Shri #BipinRawat , his wife Madhulika Rawat and 11 army personnel in the tragic helicopter crash. Gratitude for his wonderful service to the nation. Om Shanti.”
