CDS Rawat Killed In Helicopter Crash: A Look At Other Chopper Accidents That Led To Deaths Of High Profile People

Here’s a look at chopper accident which involved high-profile people including YS Rajasekhara Reddy, Sanjay Gandhi, and Madhavrao Scindia.

India’s first Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat, along with wife Madhulikha Rawat and 12 others onboard died today after a military chopper crashed in Tamil Nadu.

The tragic incident that left the nation in shock has once again reminded of the deaths in aerial crashes involving several high-profile people. Here’s a look at chopper accident which involved high-profile people including YS Rajasekhara Reddy, Sanjay Gandhi, and Madhavrao Scindia.

1. Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu:

On April 30, 2011, the helicopter carrying Khandu and four other people on a trip from Tawang to Itanagar disappeared on May 4, 2011, at around 11 am, remnants of the crashed helicopter were found by a group of locals.

2. GMC Balayogi:

Lok Sabha Speaker and Telugu Desam leader GMC Balayogi died in a chopper crash on March 3, 2002 in Andhra Pradesh.

3. YS Rajasekhara Reddy:

On September 2, 2009, the copper in which YS Rajasekhara Reddy was travelling crashed in a forest. He was travelling in a Bell 430 to Chitoor district in Andhra Pradesh.

4. OP Jindal and Surendra Singh:

Haryana’s then power minister and a noted industrialist OP Jindal, and state agriculture minister Surendra Singh were killed when the chopper carrying them developed a technical snag and went down near Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh on March 31, 2005.

5. Dera Natung and C Sangma:

Arunachal Pradesh education minister Natung was killed in a helicopter crash in May 2001. Sangma, the then Meghalaya community development minister, three legislators and six others were killed in a helicopter crash in September 2004.

6. Surendra Nath:

Punjab and Himachal Pradesh Governor Surendra Nath and nine members of his family were killed when the government’s Super-King aircraft crashed into high mountains in July, 1994.

7. Madhavrao Scindia:

A senior Congress leader and a former union cabinet minister, was killed in a Cessna aircraft crash on September 30, 2001 while travelling to Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh to address a public rally.

8. Sanjay Gandhi:

Sanjay Gandhi died instantly from head wounds in an air crash on June 23, 1980 near Safdarjung Airport in New Delhi. He was flying in a new aircraft of the Delhi Flying Club, and, while performing an aerobatic manoeuvre over his office, the aircraft lost control and crashed.

9. S Mohan Kumaramangalam:

Mohan Kumaramangalam, from the Congress, died in an Indian Airlines plane crash in 1973 near New Delhi.
