Srinagar: Terrorists lobbed a grenade towards security personnel on the busy Hari Singh High Street area of Srinagar on Tuesday but no casualty or major damage was reported. The attack comes a day ahead of Republic Day celebrations.
The terrorists lobbed the grenade towards a team of security personnel at around 3.30 PM, they said. The grenade exploded by the roadside without causing any damage.
Security forces have cordoned off the area and launched searches to nab the terrorists. Security has been beefed up in the city and elsewhere in the Valley to ensure smooth Republic Day celebrations.
This is the second incident of grenade attack in a week. On January 18, unknown terrorists lobbed a grenade towards Police Control Room (PCR) in Srinagar. Nobody was injured in the incident.
In the past few day, there have also been several encounters between terrorists and the security forces, leading to arrests of active terror associates.
Last week, on Saturday (January 22), the security forces arrested a terrorist associate of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) in Pulwama district. The terrorist associate was identified as Umer Farooq Bhat, a resident of Renzipora, Awantipora. Incriminating material, including a hand grenade, was recovered from Bhat’s possession, police said.
In Shopian two terrorists of terror outfit TRF were neutralised on the same day.
Earlier on Thursday (January 20), security forces arrested an active Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist in Budgam district of Jammu and Kashmir and seized arms and ammunition from his possession. The arrested terrorist was identified as Jehangir Ahmad Naikoo.
