JDU, BJP At Loggerheads, Chirag Paswan Claims Bihar Heading For Mid-Term Polls

CHIRAG Paswan, the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) President, has claimed that Bihar will soon face a mid-term election as the state government is on the verge of a collapse. Pointing that the recent differences within the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) have come out in the open and a bitter war of words has started among its leaders, Chirag told India Ahead that the Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is already in the election campaign mode.

There has been a heated verbal exchange between the leaders of the two major NDA partners – Bharatiya Janata Party and Janata Dal United – in the last few months on several issues including the Bihar Prohibition and Excise Act, which banned liquor in the sate.

Bihar BJP President Sanjay Jaiswal did not mince his words in issuing a threat to the JDU and reminding that the Nitish government is surviving on his party’s support. Jaiswal’s threat came after the JDU leadership hit out at him on the Bihar prohibition law.

Jaiswal has been critical of prohibition in Bihar and has been repeatedly asking for a review of the same . He also pointed that the administration had failed Nitish Kumar and the people were suffering because of the faulty implementation of the law.

Bihar has witnessed a series of hooch tragedies in January which have also given other NDA partners like the Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) and Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) to call for a review of the prohibition law.

HAM chief Jitan Ram Manjhi has been extremely critical of the prohibition law and has repeatedly sought its review. Meanwhile, the principal opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) has taunted the Bihar government, claiming there will be “Khela Hobe (the game is on)” soon.

Bihar’s political arena was abuzz with speculations when RJD leader Mrityunjay Tiwari met VIP supremo Mukesh Sahni at his residence on January 20. Sahni has of late been warming up to the RJD, leading to fears within the NDA of him defecting to Mahagathbandhan.

However, Sahni clarified later that the state government will last the full term.

The BJP leadership in the state has been critical of Nitish Kumar of late and vocal on various issues. This many feel is because the BJP wants to repay back the JDU in the same coin.

The JDU has been constantly raising the issue of caste-based census and the Bihar CM has been saying that the green signal for an all-party meeting from the BJP is still to come.

Nitish has also been demanding a special status category for Bihar. He has spoken against the Population Control Bill, an issue close to the BJP.

Recently, the RJD sent clear feelers to Nitish that the party would support him on caste-based census and the special status category demand.

The JDU remained silent when RJD Bihar President Jagdanand Singh made the above offer to Nitish Kumar. The political pundits construed the move as a pressure tactics of the JDU.

JDU leaders have on several occasions also indicated that Nitish Kumar is a PM material. Chirag Paswan, too, has pointed that Nitish Kumar harbours the ambition of becoming the Prime Minister of India.

The JDU was marginalised considerably in the 2020 Assembly elections, yet the BJP kept the poll promise and Nitish Kumar was made the CM.

The BJP for the first time seems to have assumed the role of the opposition despite being an alliance partner in the ruling coalition. The bitter war of words between the two alliance partners has now given rise to speculations of a change of guard in Bihar.
